Pupils at a Southampton school had parts of their bodies cast in plaster as part of a groundbreaking arts project. Talented artist Sarah Misselbrook was commissioned to create a piece of art with a group of pupils at Oaklands School in Lordshill.

The finished artwork now has pride of place in the reception area of the school following an unveiling ceremony attended by staff and governors.

Sarah, 25, of Southampton, is well known for her body sculptures. She has cast parts of her own body in chocolate and soap – and her work will soon be featured in an exhibition at the Beatrice Royal Gallery, Eastleigh.

‘It was a great project to work on. The pupils decided what casts would be taken but the final layout was down to me.’

‘It took three visits to the school to complete the casts – it was really messy and good fun.’
‘The finished piece is really clinical – it looks really good,’ she said.

The finished artwork includes:
The head of headteacher Dr Peter Hollis
The head of Gavin Harris, Year 10
The head of Lucy Cox, Year 8
The foot of Curtis Welch, Year 8
The top of art teacher Emma Atkinson’s face
The ear of art teacher Sue Castle
The mouth of Lucy Cox, Year 8
Three hands together belonging to George Keegan, Year 8 Curtis Welch, Year 8 and Helen Cole who has now left the school and gone to Tauntons College
A pair of hands belongs to Gavin Harris, Year 10 and Andrew Murphy, Year 8.

Sarah has also completed a commission for Sholing Girls School and she now hopes other schools may be interested.

‘I would definitely like to do more of this kind of work with another school,’ she added.
