"Essentially the sculpture of Brinley Neil Stephens is about paradox - invitation and denial, containment and exclusion co-exist in any given piece. It is minimal yet expansive, simultaneously associative and integral.
It's precedents are in the cannon of classic modernist sculpture: Picasso, Gonzalez, Brancusi, David Smith, Caro.
It is astonishing how these paved down works - devoid of ornament or frippery - can command such depth of feeling and authority. When the banal fashion of the day ironists have faded, this art will last and last."
