Winchester, UK I work with cardboard and on large scale canvases, painting and drawing quickly and immediately. My pictures contain personal narratives, a recently developed stack of symbolism and cartoon like figures. They express some social and political statements but in a playful way, which I hope incites different interpretations and imagination. Accepting certain cultural ideas can narrow our imaginations and therefore the look and our experience of the world. While gaining knowledge about these cultural ideas on my philosophy degree I came to realise that I felt as naive about the world as when I was ten years old. I hope to express this naivity in the ways I make my artwork. Experience of the Amazon Basin has influenced my work, leading me to challenge categorised, distanced and twee views of nature and to be critical of a perspective of humans as something above nature. I imagine all the amazing creatures that will not be seen before they are wiped out and try to transform used cardboard boxes (once trees) back into something lively again. I’d like to do this to the same scale and speed at which deforestation is occurring. It’s not a solution but it might look kinda neat.
